Wildlife Threats: Dogs, Mouflons & Lizards

Three confirmed DayZ Badlands animals: guard dogs, mouflons and desert monitors. No bears, no wolves - the official wildlife reveal lists none.

DayZ Badlands Animals: Dogs, Mouflons and Desert Monitors

Quick answer: DayZ Badlands ships with exactly three confirmed animals - territorial guard dogs, mouflons and the desert monitor lizard. There are no bears and no wolves in Nasdara: the official wildlife reveal names those three and nothing else, so any list adding wolves, hyenas, leopards or camels is community speculation, not announced content. As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), no fourth animal, spawn points, damage numbers or loot tables have been published.

  • Guard dogs (Doberman and German Shepherd) - threat. Packs guard specific locations, military zones first of all, and attack when you enter. They cannot be tamed.
  • Mouflon - food. A Central Asian wild sheep of the mountains and steppe; nothing in the reveal suggests it turns on you.
  • Desert monitor - food, with a caveat. It bolts the moment it notices you, but teasers confirm it can be hunted.
  • Bears, wolves and everything else - not confirmed for Nasdara.

The three confirmed DayZ Badlands animals

Animal Role Threat or food Where it lives (official) Confirmed in
Guard dog (Doberman, German Shepherd) First territorial animal in DayZ Threat - attacks in its territory, untamable Specific locations, primarily military zones Week 86 dev blog, 2026-09-25
Mouflon Prey-style ambient animal Food - no attack behaviour announced Mountains and steppes of Central Asia Week 86 dev blog, 2026-09-25
Desert monitor lizard Possibly DayZ's first reptile Food - huntable, flees on sight Dasht-e Sarman Desert and surrounding areas Week 86 dev blog, 2026-09-25

The October 2 price announcement puts the same roster in one line of its October 15 launch checklist: "New regional wildlife: dogs, desert monitors, and mouflons". Three names, no fourth entry.

Official source: DayZ Badlands Dev Blog (Week 86) - Lizard and Dogs

The blog carries its usual disclaimer - the details are work in progress and subject to change before release - so treat everything below as the announced design, not as final numbers. Nothing here has been playable outside the Creator Program, which runs from October 8 to the morning of release under embargo.

Guard dogs: DayZ's first territorial animal

Dogs are the only confirmed Badlands animal that will actively try to kill you, and Bohemia is explicit about how they differ from what DayZ already has. The blog contrasts them directly with wolves: wolves are roaming predators that cover ground, dogs are tied to a fixed location. Breach the location, get attacked.

What the official reveal actually states:

  • Two breeds: Doberman and German Shepherd, with multiple variations on top of the two.
  • Behaviour: packs act as guards for specific locations, primarily military zones, and attack if you breach their territory.
  • No taming: you will not be able to tame them or keep them as companions. That is not the design direction Bohemia chose.
  • Lore hook: the infected's best friend - traumatised by Day Zero, they stayed loyal to their previous owners and still hang around them, primarily in packs.
  • Future behaviour: Bohemia says it plans more complex behaviour than straight-line aggression, but gives no ETA.

Two practical reads. First, the dogs are a loot gate, not a world event: they mark places you were raiding anyway, so a military base or bunker run now has a living alarm attached to it. Second, every quoted number for pack size, bite damage or detection range is unverified - none of it has been published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026).

Do not plan around taming, feeding or luring the dogs

Taming is officially ruled out. Anything claiming a whistle, item or action that turns a Badlands dog into a companion is community content, and it can be invalidated by the release build on October 15, 2026.

Mouflon: the animal you are meant to hunt

The mouflon is the quiet one. Bohemia's note on it is short: the animal primarily inhabits the mountains and steppes of Central Asia, which is why it fits Nasdara's setting. There is no mention of aggression, no packs, and nothing about it defending anything.

The honest read is that the mouflon is the food animal of the three: the blog calls dogs the species that "does not quite fit the mold of either predator or prey", which implies the rest of the roster does fit one - and a wild sheep is not a predator. The reveal still publishes no meat yield, no spawn altitude and no herd behaviour.

Desert monitor: hunt it before it bolts

The desert monitor is Nasdara's signature animal, and Bohemia has a tradition of giving each terrain one. Chernarus has the regal buck, Livonia has the brown bear, Sakhal has the white wolf - Nasdara gets the desert monitor, described as possibly DayZ's first reptile.

Officially confirmed behaviour is narrow but useful:

  • It mostly inhabits the Dasht-e Sarman Desert and its surrounding areas, the eastern desert of the 267 km² map.
  • Once it notices you, it scurries away quickly, like other ambient animals.
  • Teasers suggest you can hunt it for food, and Bohemia says there are other things to get from it that it would rather you discover yourself.

So it is food that runs from you, in the least forgiving climate on the map: heat and hydration are the real killers here, so read that guide before you sprint across open sand after a lizard.

Are there bears in DayZ Badlands?

No - not as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026). There is no official announcement of bears on Nasdara, and the reveal that answered every other wildlife question named three animals without a bear among them.

There is a second, stronger argument. Bohemia says each terrain gets a representative animal, and it lists the four explicitly: Chernarus the regal buck, Livonia the brown bear, Sakhal the white wolf, Nasdara the desert monitor. Livonia already owns the brown bear. Announcing a bear for Nasdara would break the pattern Bohemia just described.

Why the rumor keeps coming back: bears do exist in DayZ. Livonia's brown bear is a real threat, and screenshots of a survivor staring one down are legitimate DayZ screenshots - just not Badlands screenshots. Add creator speculation from before the wildlife reveal (early guesswork around WOBO videos and preview threads is community content, not a Bohemia list) and you get confident-looking "Badlands animal" articles that are simply wrong. The picture above is that exact case: a DayZ bear from the base game's own media library.

Are there wolves in Nasdara?

No official confirmation either. Wolves get exactly one mention in the entire Week 86 wildlife blog, and it is a comparison: unlike wolves, which are roaming predators, these dogs are tied to specific locations. That sentence tells you wolves hunt across ground in DayZ - it does not tell you wolves are coming to Nasdara.

Wolves are real in the wider game (Sakhal's white wolf is Bohemia's own example), which is why the rumor spreads easily, but they have never appeared on a Badlands feature list. The October 15 launch checklist names dogs, desert monitors and mouflons. If wolves are added later it will show up in a dev blog or patch note, and this page will be updated then.

Pre-launch animal lists with more than three entries are not official

Anything listing wolves, hyenas, leopards, camels or bears as "DayZ Badlands animals" before October 15, 2026 is either speculation or copy from another game. Verify against the Week 86 dev blog before you build a route around it.

What about the zombies?

Dogs tie wildlife to the infected: Bohemia calls them the infected's best friend, and their territory is military zones, exactly where the new infected variants show up. Nasdara's infected look more human than usual - bloodstains, sun exposure, dust and worn clothing - plus military and police variants, while the 1.30 update reworks attack animations into upper, middle and lower strikes with a running heavy hit. Full details are on the new infected variants page.

What is still unknown

Honest gaps, as of October 10, 2026:

  • Spawn points and spawn density for all three animals - unpublished, and not guessable before launch.
  • Dog pack size, damage, detection range and whether they de-aggro when you leave territory.
  • Meat yield, nutrition and any secondary drops from the mouflon or desert monitor.
  • Whether base-game animals (wolves, chickens, goats, deer) also spawn on Nasdara - Bohemia has not said.
  • The timeline for the promised "more complex" dog behaviour - officially no ETA.

Everything else on this page comes from the Week 86 wildlife dev blog or the Dev Blog Recap 2, both published by Bohemia Interactive on the official DayZ Steam announcement feed.

FAQ

Are there bears in DayZ Badlands? No. As of the pre-launch, bears are not on the confirmed Nasdara roster, and Bohemia names the brown bear as Livonia's representative animal instead. Bears exist in DayZ - just not in Badlands.

Are there wolves in Nasdara? Not confirmed. The official wildlife reveal lists dogs, mouflons and desert monitors only; wolves appear once in the dev blog as a comparison to explain how dogs differ from roaming predators.

Can you tame the dogs in Badlands? No. Bohemia ruled it out directly: you will not be able to tame them or keep them as companions. They guard their territory and attack on entry.

Which DayZ Badlands animals can you hunt for food? The desert monitor is confirmed huntable for food, with teasers hinting at further yields. The mouflon is presented as prey-style with no aggressive behaviour. Neither has published meat values yet.

Are there zombies in DayZ Badlands? Yes. The infected return with regional variants that look more human, including military and police types, and the 1.30 update reworks their attack animations.
