DayZ Badlands Rebuilding System Explained

Rebuild over 5,000 ruined houses in Nasdara with a trowel, brick and mortar: how the DayZ Badlands rebuilding system works, materials, wells and base building.

DayZ Badlands Rebuilding System Explained

The DayZ Badlands rebuilding system lets you clear rubble and restore more than 5,000 ruined houses scattered across Nasdara — roughly 20 variants, split into mud and stone builds — using a new trowel with brick and mortar alongside familiar logs, planks and sheet metal. Scope is yours: rebuild a three-storey house for a squad, or block off one room, hang a door on it and call it a stash. Broken wells run on the same loop, and the vanilla fence builder still works beside it. Bohemia Interactive had published all of that as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026); the feature goes live at launch on October 15, 2026 with update 1.30.

What is confirmed so far:

  • Over 5,000 rebuildable houses and about 20 variants, in mud and stone versions only
  • New tool: trowel. New materials: brick and mortar. Logs, planks and metal sheets still work
  • Partial rebuilding is a supported playstyle — one barricaded room is a legal base
  • Some broken wells can be fully restored, and at least some of them want a second pair of hands
  • Vanilla base building is untouched, and the new code lock fits both rebuilt doors and old fences

What you can rebuild: 5,000+ houses, about 20 variants

Two numbers anchor the whole feature. The Week 76 dev blog states there are "approximately 20 variants of these broken down houses" and "over 5,000 rebuildable houses strategically placed around Nasdara". Bohemia's press push repeated the same scale to media as "more than 5,000 rebuildable structures".

The studio mirrored it: Dev Blog 5: The Rebuilding System.

Those variants come in exactly two flavours, and the split is narrative rather than mechanical:

Rebuildable type Stated background What it actually changes
Mud houses Owned by commoners, plainer story Cosmetic only
Stone houses Owned by more affluent owners, "different stories" Cosmetic only
Either type Varying degrees of destruction Material cost, because a wrecked shell eats more resources

The dev blog is explicit that the mud/stone difference "does not extend to the level of durability or the raid-ability of the houses". Durability comes from what you build with, not from which of the 267 km² map regions you picked.

Damage state matters more than house type. Some shells need "a heap of materials to restore everything, including some parts of the roof"; others only need a door and a set of windows fitted. Placement is deliberate: the further you move from the cities into back-country, the more torn down the houses get, which pushes the expensive repairs into low-traffic rural spots — harder to fix, but, in the studio's own framing, the most ideal locations for a base.

The developers say creators at their LAN event spotted rebuildable houses instantly, and that new players will first clock them "when you open your inventory indoors" before the visual language becomes obvious.

The rebuild loop, from rubble to finished house

Official material describes the loop as a scale decision rather than a quest chain. The practical sequence looks like this:

  1. Find a rebuildable shell. Only selected houses are in the system — this is not a tool you point at any wall in Nasdara.
  2. Clear the rubble. The studio confirms that cleaning out the rubble of torn-down houses "can yield a certain number of building materials", so demolition pays for construction. Exact yields are not published.
  3. Choose your scope. Full rebuild of a three-storey squad house, a family home, or one room walled off as a stash. Rebuilding is "completely optional" — you can stop at any stage.
  4. Restore with a material route. Four routes were named in the dev blog, and they mix freely rather than being mutually exclusive:
Official restoration route What it gives you
Wooden restoration Timber walls on the damaged openings
Brick restoration Brick walls, the masonry option
Wooden + sheet metal Windows and doors fitted in timber frames
Brick wall to barricade the door A masonry block over an entrance
  1. Secure it. Doors and windows first, then the code lock, then whatever fencing you want around the perimeter.

The studio wants every server to "tell a different story over time": one server's town fully restored and defended, the same town on another server still rubble.

Start small, then scale

A single barricaded room with one door tests a location cheaply, before you spend a squad's material stockpile on a full three-storey rebuild.

Tools and materials

Item Status in the rebuilding system
Trowel New tool introduced for this feature, shown in the official teaser
Brick New material, pairs with the trowel
Mortar New material, pairs with the trowel
Logs Existing base building material, still usable for restoration
Planks Existing base building material, still usable for restoration
Metal sheets Existing base building material, used with wood for windows and doors

Materials are a budget, not a checklist: "you have to manage your resources", and the amount needed depends on how destroyed the structure already is, so the same house model in a worse state costs more than its intact twin. Wall durability is "largely dependent on the materials you will use to restore the houses".

Nothing in the pre-launch material publishes per-wall health values, per-room material counts, or craft times. As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), those numbers do not exist in any official source, and any site showing them is estimating.

Repairing wells with the same system

Water is the other half of the feature. Nasdara is short on surface water and most conventional wells were destroyed by the war, which is why the rebuilding blog closes its design section by confirming that the system "also applies to wells".

Official source: DayZ Badlands Dev Blog Recap (1)

Some wells may already be restored when you arrive; others "need your labor and the labor of another friendly you met" before drinking water comes back. The press release says the same thing: with some hard work, some wells can be fully restored. The studio frames well repair as a public good. Well counts, repair costs and the exact co-op requirement are not published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026) — see Water & Wells in Nasdara for the wider hydration picture.

What carries over to base building

Rebuilding does not replace DayZ's base building — the two run in parallel.

  • Vanilla fences still work. The recap confirms you can "still be able to use the base game base building system to create compounds", so the common shape is a rebuilt house with a fenced perimeter around it.
  • The code lock covers both. It mounts on new rebuildable doors and on existing fences, and ships on all maps, not only Nasdara. It runs on a charged V9 battery, unlocks itself when the battery dies, and resists PIN guessing with escalating brute-force protection. Full mechanics are in the official code lock guide.
  • Raid resistance is material-driven. Because mud versus stone is cosmetic, a stone house is not harder to raid than a mud one. Plan defenses around what you build with and how many entrances you leave open.
  • Scale is a strategic choice. Squad house versus one-room stash is its own decision — see Base Building in Nasdara for the trade-offs, and the beginner starter guide for where it sits in your first hours.
Unpublished before launch

Material quantities, raid damage values, rebuildable house coordinates and any loot tied to restored buildings had not been published as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026). Treat any specific number you see elsewhere as a guess until the patch notes land on October 15, 2026.

FAQ

Can you rebuild any house in DayZ Badlands? No. Only the selected rebuildable shells — more than 5,000 of them, across roughly 20 variants — are in the system. Ordinary buildings in Nasdara cannot be repaired.

Do I need a trowel to rebuild a house? The trowel is the new tool introduced alongside brick and mortar, while logs, planks and metal sheets remain usable as before. The pre-launch blogs never spell out a step-by-step crafting order, so exact interaction prompts stay unconfirmed until launch.

Are stone houses stronger than mud houses? No. The dev blog states the split is cosmetic and does not change durability or raid-ability. Wall durability depends on the materials you restore with.

Can I rebuild solo? Partial rebuilding is explicitly supported: pick a room, block the entrance, add a door and a window — that is your stash. A full three-storey house is a group project, and some well repairs hint at wanting two players.

Does rebuilding replace base building? No. Both systems ship together — you can rebuild a house, fence the yard with the vanilla system, and put a code lock on either the rebuilt door or the fence gate.

Will the rebuilding system come to Chernarus or Livonia? Only Nasdara has rebuilding confirmed. The code lock, by contrast, was confirmed for every map.
