Base Building in Nasdara: Rebuild or Fortify

Rebuild a three-storey squad house or barricade one room as a stash: materials, code locks and the scale choice for Nasdara base building.

DayZ Badlands Base Building in Nasdara: Rebuild or Fortify

Quick answer: rebuild the whole three-storey house only when a squad can staff it, feed it materials and check every lock — until then, one barricaded room with a single code-locked door is the stronger Nasdara base. Bohemia Interactive put both ends in one feature: you can "either rebuild a three-story house for your entire squad, or simply add doors and windows to a small storage house to create a stash house." Scope is yours, rebuilding is "completely optional", and the system arrives at launch on October 15, 2026 with update 1.30. Material counts, raid values and lock thresholds were still unpublished as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), so choose by the rules below rather than by numbers nobody has published.

  • More than 5,000 rebuildable houses, roughly 20 variants, mud or stone — a cosmetic split, not armour
  • New tool and materials: a trowel with brick and mortar, plus the existing logs, planks and metal sheets
  • The code lock mounts on rebuilt doors and vanilla fences, runs on a V9 battery, and ships on every map

Choose the scale before you spend anything

Bohemia calls rebuilding "a much more forgiving system than our existing base building mechanic, since you can choose the scale of your base building project." The table applies those published rules — a judgement aid, not a stat sheet, since no material prices or raid damage values exist.

Signal on your server Rebuild the squad house Barricade one room
People who log in daily A squad that can rotate guard duty and haul One or two players who move around a lot
Material flow You can keep feeding brick, mortar and timber without going dry You spend once and stop
Lock upkeep Several doors to battery-check on every visit One lock, one battery, one check
If the base falls Large sunk cost, and the location is now known Small sunk cost; you relocate and rebuild cheap

The columns are not equally available to everyone: further from the cities, houses are more torn down — they eat more materials, but the studio calls them "the most ideal locations for base". Ambition and remoteness arrive together, which is what breaks under-resourced groups.

Path A: a three-storey squad house

This is the shape Bohemia describes as a building "fully restored and used by a squad and fenced around the perimeter as a full-on base". The rebuild gives floors, doors and windows; the vanilla fence builder gives the compound; the code lock covers both the entrance and the gate.

Four costs appear in the official material, and none are paid in crafting menus:

  • Rubble first. Cleaning out a wrecked house "can yield a certain number of building materials" — demolition feeds construction, but the yield is unpublished.
  • Distance tax. The best-positioned shells are the most damaged ones, so the ideal base costs the most to open up.
  • Vertical exposure. Nasdara's towns are built for urban fighting with "interior spaces, multi-story apartments, and rooftop access": a three-storey house defends well and is reachable from the roof line too.

Settlement density is similar to Chernarus across a 267 km² map, so a squad house is rarely the only building in view. Nominate towns with the Nasdara map overview, and decide what is worth guarding with the military bases and bunkers loot guide.

Path B: a one-room stash

The same system supports the opposite play. Bohemia's example: you can "choose a room, block off an entrance fully, put the doors in another, put in the window, and call it a day" — on another server that building is "partially blockaded by a single player holding on to their dear loot."

What the stash buys is tempo. A room needing only a door and windows is buildable on a single loot run, so you can test a location for days before committing a squad's stockpile — and if the server turns hostile you lose a door and a battery, not a project.

What it costs is depth: one layer sits between a raider and your loot, so lock and wall are the whole defence, and durability "is largely dependent on the materials you will use to restore the houses" — mud or stone, the shell is cosmetic. Keep the stash restorable rather than impressive, and put the second room elsewhere.

Materials: four official routes, one budget

Bohemia names a trowel as a new tool alongside brick and mortar, and confirms that "logs, planks, and metal sheets" from the existing system still work. The four published routes combine rather than exclude each other:

Official route What it produces Typical use
Wooden restoration Timber walls across damaged openings Cheap, fast, replaceable
Brick restoration Masonry walls The permanent option for a room you mean to keep
Wooden + sheet metal Windows and doors in timber frames Fitting openings on a stash
Brick wall to barricade the door A masonry block over an entrance Sealing a room you do not intend to open

The budget logic decides your scale: material needed "depends on how destroyed the structures are", and durability follows the materials you choose. A squad house is expensive twice, in distance and volume; a stash is cheap twice. Mechanics, rubble yields and well repair are on the rebuilding system page.

Lock strategy: one device, two jobs

The code lock is confirmed for new rebuildable doors and existing fences, and it arrives on all maps. Bohemia's published rules are short enough to plan around:

Official rule What it means for your base
Needs a charged V9 battery Lock upkeep joins well repair and wall patching as routine
Stops working and automatically unlocks when power runs out An unattended base fails open, not shut
Indestructible while attached to a door Raiders cannot shoot or bash the lock off
Damaged when detached, repaired with electronic kits Handle spares carefully off the door
Escalating brute-force protection on failed PINs Guessing stops paying; it resets on a correct PIN, time, or unlocking from within

Two placements follow: a lock on the outer gate, one on the inner room door as the real vault, because only the inner one holds your loot if the compound is breached — that layering is judgement, not official advice. Unpublished as of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026): battery life, PIN length, attempt thresholds and lockout duration, so treat any figure elsewhere as a guess. Mechanics in full are on the codelocks guide.

A dead battery is an open door

The lock "will stop working and automatically unlock if the battery power runs out", and the charge is readable on the back of the lock indoors. Build the battery check into every visit — a squad house multiplies that chore by every door it has.

Sun, sand and water: the costs no table carries

Nasdara is the hottest map Bohemia has made for DayZ, and direct sunlight affects your character, so hauling brick across town is a hydration problem before a logistics one: run material trips like loot trips, with shade and water, per the heat and heatstroke guide. Sandstorms are on the confirmed feature list in the price announcement for October 15, but their mechanics were not detailed before launch.

Wells run on the same rebuilding system: some are restored, others "need your labor and the labor of another friendly you met" before drinking water returns, so a squad house near a working well beats one in a dry valley. The repair loop sits on the rebuilding system page.

What no official source publishes yet

Pre-launch gaps, do not fill them in

As of the Badlands pre-launch (October 2026), no official source gives material quantities per wall or room, rubble yield rates, raid damage values, rebuildable house coordinates, battery duration, PIN length or lockout timers. The blogs carry a work-in-progress disclaimer: details are subject to change before release.

Server wipes are the open question with a base-building answer. Bohemia's 1.29 "Road to Badlands" stable announcement contains no mention of a wipe, and no dev blog says what happens to persistence when 1.30 goes live. Check the update 1.30 patch notes on launch day; if you run your own server, the server hosting guide covers the settings you control.

FAQ

Should I rebuild a big base or a small stash on a fresh server? Start with the stash. A room needing only a door and windows is buildable quickly, tests the location for days and costs little if found — then upgrade the same building once your group can feed it.

Is a stone house better to defend than a mud house? No. Bohemia states the split is cosmetic and "does not extend to the level of durability or the raid-ability of the houses". Durability depends on the materials you restore with, not on which of the roughly 20 variants you picked.

Can I put a code lock on my vanilla fence gate? Yes. The lock is confirmed for both new rebuildable doors and existing fences, and it arrives on every map with update 1.30 — not only on Nasdara.

Is base building worth the materials in Nasdara? Yes at both scales: back-country shells are, in the studio's words, "the most ideal locations for bases" once restored, while a one-room stash is the cheapest insurance where surface water is scarce and the sun works against you.
